CHURCHES:

CLEAR CREEK

Clear Creek Church was the fourth church organized in the northwest territory and the first in Warren County. It was gathered together by Elder James Sutton in 1797, with members who had been dismissed from the Columbia church. Its messengers to the Miami Association in 1798 were Thomas Kelsey, Ebenezer Osborne, and Francis Dunlevy. Nathaniel Blackford and Fergus McLean were among the early members. They built a log meeting house a little north of the present site of Ridgeville, in Warren County.

TURTLE CREEK (LEBANON, WEST LEBANON)

Turtle Creek Church originally met as an arm of Clear Creek Church, and was organized as a separate church on Saturday, December 11, 1802. The original members were Daniel Clark, Sarah Clark, Stephaneus Clark, Sarah Clark, Mary Cowen, Matthias Corwin, James Daniels, Hannah Daniels, Rhoda Daniels, Joseph Dongins, Lewis Drake, Mary Drake, Rebecca Drake, Francis Dunlevy, Mary Dunlevy, Mary Hale, Martha Kerr, Joseph Lamb, Ruth Lamb, Rachel Lambert, Thomas Lucas, Sarah Lyttle, Mary Monroe, Ebenezer Osborn, John Osborn, Mary Osborn, William Stephens, Rachel Stephens, Elizabeth Stephens, Peter Yawger, Lydia Yawger, and Alexander Van Pelt. The church had grown to 45 members by the time it united with the Miami Association in 1803. Within ten years the church outgrew the log meeting house, east of Lebanon, and moved into a new brick meeting house, which was built on West Mulberry Street, which was used for about fifty years. The "Pioneer Cemetery" was adjacent to the church. Elder Daniel Clark served the church as pastor. In about 1814, Elder Stephen Gard, was called as assistant, then in 1819, Elder Wilson Thompson was called as assistant.

TODD'S FORK

TAPSCOTT (CARLISLE)

Tapscott Church, near Franklin, was organized on August 13 (another source says August 19), 1814, with eight charter members, viz., James Tapscott, Joseph Tapscott, John Marsh, James Holms, William Martin, Nancy Marsh, Mary Tapscott, and Mary Berry. Elder Peter Poyner was chosen moderator of the first business session in September 1814.

Elder Jacob Mulford was chosen pastor in May 1819. He was followed by Stephen Gard, Samuel Williams, Ephraim Barker, Edmund Stevens, John M. Thompson, J. C. Reed, William Curry, C. M. Struble, E. A. Huchison, C. P. Ballard, Russel Moore, Ed Allen, Earl Daily, Ralph Culy, James Baker, Roy Motsinger, and James Baker.

The first meeting house was a log structure, built on one acre of land, which was left in the will of James Tapscott, who departed this life in November 1815. The will stated that the land should be held by the Miami Association for ever. The church joined the Miami Association in September 1814.

In December 1838, Tapscott Church petitioned the legislature of Ohio for an act to incorporate the church and secure for the members the right of their property. In March 1863, Richard Wooly donated a parcel of ground adjoining the former plot, and the present brick building was erected on it shortly thereafter.
