CHURCHES:

SUGAR CREEK (CENTERVILLE)

Sugar Creek Church was organized at the home of one of the members, in 1799, under the labors of Elder Daniel Clark. It is believed there were nine charter members, four male and five female. The first church meeting on record was held November 2, 1799. In 1801 this church united with the Miami Association. Elder Joshua Carman was chosen pastor in 1802; he was followed by Elder John Mason, who advocated a general atonement, which divided the church. The minority was recognized by the Miami Association, who called for the pastoral care of Elder Wilson Thompson. During the ministry of Elder Thompson the minority of the church prospered, with over 100 members being added. They had been meeting in a barn, but were able to build a new stone meeting house, in about 1828. It was replaced many years later with a neat frame building. Pastors who followed included Elders Jacob Mulford, Stephen Gard, Thomas Childers, Moses Frazee, Elihu Moore, Samuel Williams, William Butler, John A. Thompson, Grigg Thompson, John M. Thompson, and others.

SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:

Allen, Brewer, Bridenbaugh, Conley, Ford, James, John, Jones, Kelsey, Loy, McClucas, McGlade, Popenoe, Prugh, Rimer, Stansel (very incomplete list).
