CHURCHES (COUNTY):

SHAFTSBURY (BENNINGTON)(1768)

"The first Baptist church in Vermont was organized at Shaftsbury in the latter part of August, 1768. The charter members were Cyprian Downer, John Millington, Samuel Waters, Icabod West, Reuben Ellis, Thomas Matteson, and Lydia Barr. They had increased to 39 members, 20 of whom were men, by August 1774. This church became a member of the Shaftsbury Association, which had churches in several adjoining states.
