Z I O N ' S A D V O C A T E
(Established in 1854)

The first issue was issued at Front Royal, Virginia, January 1854, by Elder John Clark, who was editor for about thirty years except irregularly for about seven years during and after the Civil War. After his death, it was published for several years by J. G. Wiltshire, Elder T. S. Dalton, Elder John R. Daily for eight years, Dr. C. H. Waters for several years. Elder R. H. Pittman purchased the paper in May 1919, and in January 1921 purchased The Messenger of Truth from Elder F. P. Branscome. In March 1923, the Gospel Messenger was also merged with it.

T H E M E S S E N G E R O F P E A C E

We have ten reels of microfilm from the Historical Society of Missouri which include volumes 1 (1874) through 36 (1910), but they are incomplete. Our own paper copies are shown for each year below using month and day, and copies from other microfilms are marked with issue #s. Holdings at the University of Missouri, Historical Society of Missouri, 1020 Lowry Street, Columbia, MO 65201, included a collection of hardbound volumes of the Messenger of Peace, and supposedly they were microfilmed, along with other volumes loaned to them to be filmed. We were told, much to our dismay, that they then burned their hardbound volumes.

Elder John E. Goodson, Sr., was editor from November 15, 1874, until his death September 16, 1892.

T H E C H U R C H A D V O C A T E

Edited by Elder Lemuel Potter, 1841-1897, of Grayville, Illinois, and later of Ft. Branch, Indiana, the Church Advocate first appeared as a semi-monthly in the Fall of 1872 (the November 1872 issue was Vol. 1, No.4). Between 1872 and 1878, four volumes (or parts of volumes) appeared, including at least parts of the years 1872, 1873, 1874, 1877, and 1878. Publication of the paper was suspended in 1879 (the last issue being Vol. 4, No. 15), due to the printer thinking he could not afford to continue it, as his income was from a percentage of the subscriptions. In February 1892 (almost thirteen years later), the paper was revived, as Volume 5, and continued until it was merged with the Primitive Monitor, in December 1897. In 1892, 1893, 1896, and 1897, the Church Advocate was published in pamphlet size. In 1894 and 1895 it was published in newspaper size.
We have no original issues from 1872 through 1876; but we do have 1873, Vol 1, No. 10, in digital format. Our holdings include Vol. 3, No. 1, Oct. 1, 1877 through Vol. 3, No. 14, April 15, 1878. We have Feb. 1892-Dec. 1892 and the full year of 1893 in bound volumes. We have loose issues, as follows, after 1893: May 1, 1894; July 15, Aug 1, Nov 15, 1895; March, June, July, August, September, October, November and December 1896; Jan 1, 15, Feb 1, 15, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, and October 1897. We also have 1896, Vol. 9, No. 2 in digital format.

Editors: Elder Thomas J. Bazemore, of Macon, Georgia, was the founder and first editor, serving for about one year. The first issue appeared in October 1878. Brother J. A. Crews became proprietor and editor with Elder Bazemore in April 1879. Elder J. R. Respess, (born October 2, 1831, died 1895) followed Elder Bazemore as editor. Elder William M. Mitchell, (born January 10, 1819, died February 26, 1901) became associated with Elder Respess in 1881, and Elder J. E. W. Henderson (born January 23, 1839) in 1886, and Elder Sylvester Hassell (born July 28, 1842, died August 18, 1928) in February 1892. Elder Hassell purchased the paper in 1896 from the family of Elder J. R. Respess. During the time Elder Hassell served as editor, associate editors included Elders James H. Oliphant, Lee Hanks, and G. W. Stewart. In February 1920 Elder Hassell sold the paper to Elder Z. C. Hull, of Atlanta, Georgia, who published it under the same name for about three years, and then sold it to Elder R. H. Pittman, in April 1923. Elder Pittman merged it with his paper, which was already called "Advocate & Messenger" as a result of the merging of Zion's Advocate and Messenger of Truth.
A complete set of this paper from 1878-1923 is located at NRAB
(American Baptist Historical Society, Rochester, NY.)

Elder Daniel Parker began this monthly publication, Church's
Advocate (masthead: "Truth is Powerful"), in October 1829. The
printing was done by Elihu Stout, at Vincennes, Indiana. The
first volume (bound zerox copies) is complete in our files. The
second and last volume of this periodical for the period October
1830 through September 1831 has been microfilmed, and we have a
copy of the same. There was supposedly a 13th number for one of
the volumes, which we do not have.

T H E W E S T E R N P R E D E S T I N A R I A N B A P T I S T
(Edited by Elder Richard M. Newport, Paris, Illinois, and Elder
H. T. Craig, Morgantown, Ind., published first at Paris, Ill.,
later at Charleston, Ill.)

(The first issue of The Western Predestinarian Baptist was dated January 21, 1842, and continued to be published as late as May 15, 1846, and possibly a few years longer. Elder Richard M. Newport served as moderator of the Wabash District Association as late as 1846, but afterward moved to southwestern Missouri, where he continued to labor in the ministry until his death. His experience was published in the Signs of the Times, and reprinted in 1888, in the Primitive Monitor, and is available in pamphlet form.

(Elder Peter Long, Rock Well & Greenville, Illinois, Editor)

We have a microfilm, made from the original material at the
Illinois State Historical Library, in Springfield, Illinois. It
has the following: July 1849 through December 1851 complete.
This paper began in January 1845 and continued for about
twelve (12) years. A detailed account of information regarding
the places and manner of its publication has been compiled by Mr.

Howard St., Evanston, Illinois 60202, which we have kept in our
files.

"Dupuy's Hymns and Spiritual Songs" was originally compiled by Elder Starke Dupuy (a Baptist minister who lived in Kentucky and Tennessee) in about 1818. The book was revised even after his death. The title page of one of our two copies is missing, but the two page preface is signed by J. M. P. (John Mason Peck), November 1843, Rockspring, Illinois, and states that about 100,000 copies had been put in circulation by that date. The copy which contains the title page shows that it was printed by John P. Morton & Co., and copyrighted by Morton and Griswold in the District Court of Kentucky.

PAMPHLETS:

WRITINGS PUBLISHED BY ELDER W. S. CRAIG (1867-1961):

3. THE SCARLET THREAD. 1922. 27 pp. Wherein the typical significance of the thread which saved Joshua's two spies and Rahab's house from destruction, is illustrated.

8. THE ATONEMENT. 1925. Part I. Pages 1-56. Part II. Pages 57-104. A treatise on the atonement of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Preface, definitions, necessity of, design, extent, and results of the atonement.

11. ADAM. 1925. 49 pp. Some observations and notes on his disobedience and the sad results of it. The object of this booklet is to plainly set forth, from a Bible standpoint, the condemned, sinful, and morally-ruined condition of man according to nature, or as he is born into this world as a descendant of Adam after his Fall, and thereby show the absolute necessity of our merciful Lord's redeeming grace.

12. CHRISTIAN HUMILITY. 1925. Some comments and many extracts on this gracious ornament of Christian character.

15. THE GLORIOUS TRIUMPHS OF GRACE. Third edition, 1924. 88 pp. Being mainly an abridgement of Abraham Booth's "Reign of Grace". Abraham Booth was an English Baptist minister of rare abilities. But for this unbelieving age his writings are far too sound in doctrine to be sufficiently popular for republication. If his works were not in print, there would be no good reason why I should write these pages, and I surely would not do so.

19. JUSTIFICATION (BEFORE GOD). 1925. 55 pp. The subject of justification is of such very great importance that I feel I should write more upon it than I have in the short chapter on this subject in my "Triumphs of Grace," and in doing so I have used considerable material from that chapter.

20. THE FIVE POINTS. 1925. 60 pp. These five points form the links of one harmonious chain, which if correctly understood, will be seen to be quite consistently related to each other, viz., Total depravity, Unconditional election, Special redemption, Effectual calling, and Certain perseverance.

21. BRIEF NOTES ON MANY TEXTS SUPPOSED TO FAVOR CONDITIONALISM. 1924. 56 pp.

22. MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES. 1925. 56 pp. The Binding, Sufferings, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Also, unbelief and belief, and The Gospel.
