CHURCHES:

DEEP CREEK

The church at Deep Creek is believed to be the oldest of any denomination in this county. The church can trace its beginnings to the time when Elder John Gano moved to the Jersey settlement from Morristown, New Jersey. These residents gathered for services in the Yadkin area as early as 1758, but later moved, due to an "incursion of Indians" as described in Benedict's History of the Baptists. Elder Gano returned to New Jersey, but it is known that the church continued in various locations; minutes after 1778 show that regular meetings and conferences were being held. Elder Joseph Murphy was the pastor at that time. The names of the charter members, or presbytery, are not known, but Joseph and William Murphy were baptized by Elder Shubal Stearns and began to preach at a young age, and were called "The Murphy Boys." In 1851 the associaton met with Deep Creek at Hutchen's Schoolhouse on Coe's Creek. In 1869 the association met with Deep Creek at Holly Springs in a log meetinghouse. About 1912, a new building was built on this site, which is still in use today. It has recently been restored. Deep Creek Church is a member of the Little Yadkin Association. Early pastors included Elder Joshua (1817). He was followed by Elders James J. Speer, John Jones, and A. M. Denny.
