CHURCHES:

UNION (WOODBURN)(1795/1796)

Union Church was organized in 1795 near the West Fork of Drakes Creek. The early preachers in the area were Elders John Hightower, Alexander Devin, and Joseph Logan. Elder John Hightower was the first pastor, and served until 1813. In 1812 Union Church united with the Gasper River Association; in 1820, it went into the constitution of the Drakes Creek Association. In the division over missions, this church stood with the Primitive Baptists.

LICK FORK

TRAMMEL'S FORK OF DRAKES CREEK (UNION)

Trammel's Fork of Drakes Creek Church was organized in 1796. It became a member of the Mero District, then the Cumberland, then the Red River, and finally the Drakes Creek Association. When the division occurred over missions, this church stood with the Primitive Baptists. Elder John Hightower was the first pastor.

PROVIDENCE KNOB (1804)

Providence Knob Church was organized on the last Saturday in September, 1804, by Elders John Hightower and John Martin, with nine charter members. Jesse Boyce was chosen deacon and John Martin pastor. In 1805 the church joined the Cumberland Association; in 1808 for convenience the church joined the Red River Association; and in 1809, joined the Green River Association. The Gasper River Association was organized at this church on September 26, 1812. Early clerks of the church included John Wren, Lazarus Webb, and Cornelius Turner.
