CHURCHES:

LOONEY'S CREEK, SHELBYVILLE

Looney's Creek Church was organized Saturday, May 14, 1836, with eight charter members, Rhodes Gentry, Ally Gentry, James Lear, Jensy W. Lear, William Randolph, Nancy Randolph, Caroline Looney, and William Moffett, all of whom had formerly been members of the Pleasant Hill Church, in Marion County. The presbyery was composed of Elders Robert Hendren and Charles L. Turner.

The same year, 1836, Looney's Creek Church united with the Bethel Association, but withdrew after the session of 1837, after a resolution declaring non-fellowship for the modern mission system was presented and read publickly, but defeated by a small majority when the vote of the churches was taken. Looney's Creek Church was one of seven churches in the Bethel Association which withdrew in remonstrance against the mission system. In October 1838 eight churches met and organized the Two River Association.

Pastors who served the church included Elders Henry Louthan, Franklin M. Turner, Jonas F. Sutton, James Burk (ordained here in June 1889), Silas W. Sears, A. D. Hutchison, H. S. Peak, W. J. Pollard, C. C. Melton, A. J. Conlee, Baxter Hale, Stuart Flanigan, and Clyde O. Johnson.

In March 1846 the church appointd a committee to superintend the building of a meeting house. By February 1847 the work was completed and the church met there for the first time. In 1893 the church built a new frame meeting house, replacing the old one, and the cost of the same was recorded in the records in 1894.
