CHURCH:

CENTRE (CENTERTOWN/MILTON)

The First Old School Baptist Church called Centre was organized late in 1844 or early 1845. A letter from Bro. David Douglas, published in the Christian Doctrinal Advocate and Spiritual Monitor, in September 1844, names five members who were desirous of being organized into a church at Centertown. Centre Church became a member of the First Northwestern Association of Regular Baptists, probably in 1845. In about 1850 the church withdrew from the association and remained an independent church thereafter. In April 1850, the church received nine new members, including seven by baptism. The church met at least part of the time in the home of Elder Joseph D. Wilcox, the pastor, in Milton, just north of Janesville.

SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:

Beck, Curtis, Douglass, Norris, Price, Tenney, White, Wilcox (very incomplete list due to loss of records).
