CHURCHES:

SILVER CREEK

Silver Creek Church was organized on the third Saturday in August 1819, and was the first church of any faith in what is now Randolph County. The church was first called Happy Zion, and sometimes referred to as Goose Pond. The name was changed to Silver Creek in 1827. It was a log building, originally located about one half mile west of Mt. Airy. It was replaced with another log building in 1833, and finally with a frame building in 1861-1862. There is a cemetery at the site. A few of the charter members included Abraham Gross, Sallie Gross, Noah Gross, Thomas Henson, William Harvey, and Asa Kirby. Another early member was William Holman Sr. Elders Thorp and Hubbard are credited with organizing the church.

Silver Creek Church united with the Mt. Pleasant Association in September 1819. Pastors who served the church included Elders Thomas Henson, Charles Harriman, James Ratliff, Thomas Fristoe, and William Sears. Among the early members who were prominent, influential citizens in the community were William Harvey, William Fort, Hardy Sears, William Morrow, Joe Morrow, Ambrose Halliburton, Blandon Smith, Abraham Gross, Sarah Humphrey, Basil McDavitt, Wiley Sears Sr., David Crews, Charles Finnell, William Cavins, Benjamin Hardister, and Richard Bradley.
