CHURCH:

BETHEL (LAMAR)(1898)

Bethel Church was organized on Saturday before the fourth Sunday in May, 1898, eight miles north of Lamar, with four charter members, viz., Elder W. C. Perdue, Louisa P. Perdue, Sarah E. Shinn, and Malinda Lay. The presbytery was composed of Elder J. J. Rowland and Bro. W. I. Tucker, of West Liberty Church in Haskell Co., Kansas. Lucinda Tucker and Sarah Rowland were also present.

During the first four years of this church, six people were received by letter and eleven by baptism. In July 1904, Elder D. B. Nowels was ordained to the ministry here. An advertisement of western lands, published in the Messenger of Peace (a Primitive Baptist periodical), shows that the church had grown to forty members by 1915. Bethel Church extended an arm for several years to Loveland, Colorado, and meetings were held there, but we have found no account of a church being organized there.

SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:

Buck, Burch, Butcher, Crawford, Hall, Hardy, Holdren, Lay, Long, Matthews, May, Mitchell, Nowels, Perdue, Peterson, Prior, Ross, Shinn, Thompson, Wathen, Wood, Yeoman. At Loveland arm: Adams. (very incomplete list due to loss of records).
