JACK'S CREEK (WOOLWINE)(1804)

Jack's Creek Church, near Woolwine, was organized prior to May 1813, the oldest record now in existence. 98 members were recorded by 1816. The first church was a log building with a fireplace and small windows, and a balcony. Another log building replaced the first, which burned in a forest fire.

UNION

Union Church organized in about 1815. It is located about two miles from Fairystone State Park. This church is a member of the Smith River Association.

CONCORD (MEADOWS OF DAN)(1836)

Concord Church, at Meadows of Dan, was organized on the third Saturday in August, 1836. The charter members came from Jack's Creek Church. They were: Thomas Thompson, Emily Thompson, Spencer Cockram, Nancy Cockram, William Potter, Nancy Potter, William Harris, Elizabeth Harris, Thomas B. Shelor, and Mary Shelor. The presbytery was composed of Elders Nathaniel Thompson, John Turner, and Joshua Adams.

The first meeting house was a log structure. It was replace with a frame house in 1854. The present building was erected in 1912.

GREEN HILL (HOWELL)(1836)

Green Hill Church was organized on the second Saturday in September, 1836, at Green Hill meeting house. The charter members were: Coonrod Plasters, Hannah Plasters, Anna Plasters, John Arington, Anna Arington, John Ingram, Ruth Clifton, Elisabeth Vipperman, Joseph Edwards, Elisabeth Edwards, David Griffith, Vila Griffith, Jane Griffith, Claiborn Plasters, Elitia Plasters, William Griffith, Nancy Griffith, Jane Edwards, Elisabeth Edwards, Vina Edwards, Jane Edwards, Martin Clifton, Susanah Clifton, Isaac Griffith, Elisabeth Griffith, Lewis Edwards, Nancy Edwards, Bevrage Handy, Nancy Handy, Ruth Brammer, Daniel Fain, Sally Fain, Jane Fain, Barnard Fain, Martha Fain, Daniel Vipperman, Nancy Vipperman, Nancy Vipperman, Lucinda Cockram, William Cassell, Austin Cassell, John Cassell, Elisabeth Cassell, Jonas Plasters, Sarah Plasters, Elisabeth Gilbert, Elisabeth Fitzgerald, Betty (negro), Anna Webb, Peter Handy, William Cassell Jr., John Bowlin, Sally Bowlin, William J. Robertson, Charlotte Parker, Mary Fulcher, Cloah Handy, Stacy Fitzgerald, Ruth Griffith, Henry Handy, and Fleming Plasters. The presbytery was composed of Elders Jesse Jones, John Conner, John Turner, and Joshua Adams. Elder John Conner Sr. was chosen as the first pastor.

BELL SPUR (MEADOWS OF DAN)

Bell Spur Church was organized in 1860 with members from State Line Church in the Mayo Association. The presbytery was composed by Elders Samuel Arrington, Claiborn Plaster, and Daniel Conner.

The first meeting house was built of logs and had a large rock fireplace and chimney. In 1891 a new church building was erected, which has been remodeled several times over the years.

Pastors have included Elders Claiborn Plaster, James Thompson, Allen Thompson, James M. Blancet, C. A. Vipperman, Joel E. Marshall, G. W. Nooncaster, W. L. Gardner, E. B. Harris, W. F. Worrell, Bruce Clifton, Alvin Puckett, and Oscar A. Harris.

DAN RIVER (VESTA)(1884)

Old Dan River Church was organized October 9, 1884, in the bounds of the Smith River Association. Elder James M. Blancett presided as moderator and John A. Cruise as clerk. In 1933, the church came out of the Smith River Association. Elders Leander DeHart, Jim Matt Vipperman, and Joel Marshall served the church between 1933 and 1952. At that time the church joined the New River Association, with Elder C. F. Martin as moderator. Elder Alvin Puckett became moderator in 1971 and served until his death in 1988. In 1990, Dan River Church became an independent church, and Elder Donnie Conner became the pastor.

MOUNTAIN VIEW

Mountain View Church started with preaching at the old Clark's schoolhouse, and was organized as a church on March 30, 1895.

PLEASANT GROVE

Pleasant Grove Church, near Moorefield (no history obtained).

GOBLINTOWN

Goblintown Church was organized in November 1896, with ten charter members, viz., G. L. Harris, L. Pinkney Hall, Melinda Stovall Hall, Nash J. Wright, Annie Ross Wright, Susan Stovall Wright, William J. Law, Judith Slaughter Law, Martha J. Lackey, and F. W. Roberson. The presbytery was composed of Elders A. J. Cassell, William R. Radford, Asa D. Shortt, Wiley A. Via, and P. A. Cahill.

The present church building was constructed shortly thereafter.

Pastors have included A. Philpott, Daniel Helms, George Lackey, Peter Brammer, Peter Corn, S. Koger, Layton Wingfield, Benjamin Martin, S. L. Moran, J. G. L. Hash, A. J. Cassell, William R. Radford, Patrick A. Cahill, and James D. Cockram.

DOBYNS (STUART)

Dobyns Church was organized at the Dobyns Schoolhouse, on Saturday, September 2, 1911, with twenty-one members. Members who petitioned State Line Church to extend an arm to this community, in February 1911, included R. A. Arrington, Alice Arrington, S. G. Dobyns, Ruth Dobyns, Rosa A. Williams, Sarah Hall, and Louise Handy. By June of the same year, twelve additional members were received and baptized. The presbytery was composed of Elders J. M. Blancett, A. L. Moore, E. M. Barnard, Joel E. Marshall, J. M. Dickerson, W. H. Collins, F. P. Stone, and L. F. Gilbert.

COMMUNITY (STUART)

Community Church, located at the foot of Lover's Leap Mountain, just off Highway 58, was organized on September 28, 1935, with twelve members, viz., Alice Hughes, Luella Plasters, W. G. Martin, Elsie Martin, Mary Fulcher, Alice G. Cruise, Emma L. Turner, Martha A. Turner, R. F. Turner, C. W. Turner, Josie G. Thomas, and Hilery C. Hughes.

Elder Joel E. Marshall was chosen as the first pastor and served as long as his health permitted. Later pastors have included L. J. Corn, R. W. Turner, and Donnie Conner.

At first worship services were held in a grove; later a small meeting house was built by the men and boys in the community. Homemade seats were also built by members and friends. New seats, pulpit furnishings, bathrooms, and a fellowship room have now been added to the building.

LOCUST GROVE

Locust Grove Church was built by a small group of members in 1948-1949. Pastors have included George Nooncaster, Henry Bowman, J. D. Belton, and Leonard J. Corns.
