CHURCHES:

FALLS OF TAR RIVER (1757)

Fall of Tar River Church was organized on Swift Creek, by Elders C. Daniel and John Moore, in the year 1757. Elder John Moore was the pastor for a number of years, until he removed from the neighborhood in 1780. After this, Elder Emmanuel Skinner, a member of the church, supplied the place of a pastor but was not called to that office. He moved to Tennessee in 1797. In 1795 Elder Nathan Gilbert joined the church from Scuppernong church, and was called as pastor in 1802. In 1802 eighty members were added to the church by baptism, and in 1803 seventy-four more were added. That year, eighty members were dismissed to form a church on Town Creek. After the death of Elder Gilbert, Elder Joshua Lawrence was called, and within two years over a hundred were added to the church. Up to the year 1833, there had been six hundred thirty-five members of this church, including eight ministers within that period, viz: Emmanuel Skinner, Jordan Sherrod, Lewis Wells, John Atkinson, Elisha Battle, Jesse Andrews, Dr. John Gilbert, and Josiah Crudup. The Battle family were prominent members of this church. Elder Lawrence resigned in 1830, and in 1846 Elder Blount Cooper was called. Elder Robert D. Hart accepted the pastoral care in 1856, servin guntil 1873. He was followed by Elder P. D. Gold. In 1803 the church was meeting in a commodious meeting house which stood on the north of Tar River, a small distance from the Falls. An incendiary set fire to the house, but a new building of much larger capacity was soon built to replace it. A brick structure was later built, located in Rocky Mount.

CASTALIA (1874)

This church was constituted April 17, 1874, by Elders Bennett Pitt and William Woodward. Brethren Samuel Lancaster and William Odom served her as deacons. Elder Russell Tucker served as pastor from 1875 until 1876, followed by Elder B. C. Pitt, and then Elder William E. Bellamy. This church united with the Kehukee Association in 1874, Samuel Lancaster and Joseph Harper being her messengers.

HOPELAND (WHITAKER'S) (1879)

This church was constituted April 4, 1879, at Whitaker's, N.C., and was first called the Church at Whitaker's, but the name was afterwards changed to Hopeland. The conference which formed the church was composed of Elders P. D. Gold and Andrew J. Moore, and brethren C. B. Killebrew, Calvin Woodard, J. H. Pippen, N. K. Pippen, Lawrence Billups, Robert Armstrong, Norfleet Cutchin, and others. They met in Elder Andrew J. Moore's Academy at Whitaker's. The following seven members, all from William's, first composed the church: N. K. Pippen, Lawrence Billups, J. H. Pippen, S. E. Pippen, Carrie E. Pippen, Mary Cherry, and Martha Billups. They continued to meet in the Academy until 1881, when they moved into a new and commodious house of worship nearby. Hopeland Church joined the Kehukee Association in 1879.
