CHURCHES:

HAZEL CREEK FORK OF MUDDY CREEK (1798)

Hazel Creek Church was organized December 3, 1798, with five members, viz., Benjamin Tolbert, John Keith, Hannah Keith, Mahetable Morton, and George Brown. Elder Benjamin Tolbert was chosen the first pastor and served for many years. This church was a member of the Green River Association, and later of the Gasper River Association.

NELSON CREEK (1803)

Nelson Creek CHurch was formed first as an arm of Hazel Creek, in 1799, with twelve members, and then was organized as an independent church, June 10, 1803, with Isaac and Peggy Davis, Lenox and Sarah Rose, William and Rebecca Cross, John and Martha Duvall, Warren Davis, Mary Hunsinger, Mollie Randolph, and Sarah (a black woman). The presbytery was composed of Elders Benjamin Tolbert and James Keel.
