CHURCH:

CORTEZ

Cortez Church, now located at 900 S. Oak Street, in Cortez, was organized on January 12, 1958, with ten charter members, viz., Lara Sue Broom, Rebecca Hardesty, Earl W. Harris, Orpha Harris, Mattie Henderson, Opal Henderson, Cathy Higgins, Ella Reed, Elder J. C. Smart, and Ruby Smart. The presbytery was composed of Elders J. C. Smart and Archie Mobley, and Bro. Morris Nowlin. Elder J. C. Smart was chosen as pastor, and Sister Sue Broom as clerk. The church first met in a small building at the same site, where the present building now stands, which was built between 1968 and 1971.
