CHURCHES:

LIBERTY (1843)

Liberty Church, near Linneus, was organized in July 1843, by Elder George Baker. The charter members included John Reed, Reuben Couch, Anthony Hines, Anna Hines, Susan Hines, and Abikah Woods, but there were about twenty, some of the names having been lost.

A frame meeting house, with dimensions of 30 by 40 feet, costing about $1,000, was built in 1875, on the northeast quarter of the northwest quarter of section ten, township 58, range 20. Two acres of land were deeded to the church by J. P. Moore, for a cemetery.

Pastors included Elders George Baker, H. B. Willoughby, William Elston, Mastin Doty, Wilson Thompson, and Walter Cash.

Liberty Church was one of the original members of the Yellow Creek Association.

SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:

WEST UNION, BUCKLIN (1844)

West Union Church was organized on December 19, 1844, with eight charter members, viz., Sampson Wyett, William Elston, Little B. Witt, George Tooley, Eliza Tooley, Rhoda Elston, Rhoda Watson, and Elvina Elston. Elder Martin Morgan was the first pastor of the church. In August 1845 Elder William Elston was ordained by the church and called as pastor. Later pastors included Elders C. M. Colyer, William Mitchell, Wilson Thompson, Walter Cash, S. L. Pettus, Walter Acton, Floy Gross, and Loyd Bryant.

For many years the church met in members' homes or rented buildings. In 1898 it was agreed to build a meeting house, which was completed in 1901, on land donated by Brother Ambrose Cash, near Marceline. The building was large and hard to heat, so in 1930 the church began meeting in members' homes during the winter. In 1944 the place of meeting was moved to Bucklin, Missouri.
