CHURCH:

MT. ZION

Mt. Zion Church was organized at a meeting held Saturday, June 17, 1961, in the Bicket Store building in Zion, Illinois. The eight charter members were: Q. Q. Sanderson, Wiley Broughman, Earl Sanderson, Allie A. Owens, Lillie Sanderson, Mary Broughman, Lena Miller and Lena Owens. The presbytery was composed of Elders Lloyd W. Clapp, Hoyt Poore, and Esley J. Kirk, and Deacons Carmie E. Owens and Paul Short.

Prior to the organization of this church, several members of the Primitive Baptist churches in Mississippi had located in or near Zion, Illinois, and Kenosha, Wisconsin. These members came together for services as early as April 1954. Meetings were held in rented buildings, with the congregation changing, until it was agreed to constitute a church.

Mt. Zion Church met in the Bicket Store building until 1965, when the Pleasant Prairie Town Hall, near Kenosha, Wisconsin, was leased for that purpose. Beginning in 1973, the meeting place was changed to the Beach Park School, located on Lewis Avenue and Beach Road, just north of Waukegan, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago. Pastors included Elders Esley J. Kirk, B. T. Stevens, and Thurman Ritchie.
