CHURCHES:

MT. PLEASANT (1812)

Mt. Pleasant Church was organized April 8, 1812, by Elders William Thorp and David McLain, in a log schoolhouse, a short distance from Franklin, in Howard County. The following were its original members: Elder David McLain, Samuel Brown, Abraham Groom, John Berry and wife, David McQuitty, Elisha Todd, Sarah Todd, William Creson and wife, William Monroe and wife, Isham Revis, Berry Wren and wife, Josiah Brown and Frances his wife, Daniel Engart and wife, Mr. Hill, and Mrs. Winscott. Elder William Thorp and his wife united with the church in November 1816.

During the early history of the church, its members passed through severe trials on account of the Indian war. No church meetings were held from September 1812 to January 1816. During all this time Elders McLain and Thorp held meetings and preached in the forts. Elder David McLain was chosen pastor in July 1812 and served until April 1819, when Elder William Thorp was chosen. He resigned in February 1824, and was succeeded by Ebenezer Rogers, who continued until September 1833. In 1835 Elder Reuben Alexander was chosen and served for one year, when William Duncan was chosen.

Mt. Pleasant Church united with the Illinois Association in 1817. On July 25, 1818, it hosted the organizational meeting of the Mt. Pleasant Association, the churches involved being Mt. Pleasant, Concord, Mount Zion, and Bethel. Elder William Thorp was the first moderator of the new association.

The church divided several times during the first twenty-five years of its existence. In 1817, on account of slavery; in 1831, over the choice of a pastor; in 1832, on the question of missions; in 1834, several were disaffected and went with the Campbellites; and in 1838, several united with the Methodists.

MOUNT ZION

Mount Zion Church was organized December 20, 1817, at the house of Elisha Todd, four or five miles south of the present town of Fayette, in Howard County. The charter members were Elder David McLain and wife, Thomas Hulbarth, Elisha Todd and wife, Henry Burnham, and Elders Colden Williams and Edward Turner. Elder McLain was chosen moderator.

In June 1818 they agreed to build a house of worship on Bonne Femme Creek, about one mile north of where the church was constituted. In 1831 the church divided on the mission question. It was one of the charter members of the Mt. Pleasant Association.
