CHURCHES:
BETHEL (HURRICANE GROVE/BEETOWN)
Bethel Church was organized in 1841, or within a year previous, at Hurricane Grove (Beetown), by Elder Darius Bainbridge, who came to this area from southeastern Missouri. There is evidence that Bethel Church had a meeting house at Hurricane Grove by 1852, as the association met there that fall. In 1842 when Bethel Church hosted the association, the meeting was held at the home of Elder Darius Bainbridge, the pastor.
SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:
Bainbridge, Booth, Darnall, Elton, Richardson (very incomplete list due to loss of records).
BETHLEHEM (PLATTEVILLE/SMELTZER'S GROVE)
Bethlehem Church was organized at the home of Ann Saltzman, in Platteville, in May 1841. The early members undoubtedly moved to the area to work in the lead mines. In 1855 this church hosted the First Northwestern Association at the schoolhouse in Smeltzer's Grove. Among the ministers who served this church were Elders John Parsons, Darius Bainbridge, Andrew Gregg, Benjamin Sallee, and Thomas Davey. Elder Gregg moved to the state of Oregon, taking the church record book with him, and it has not been found.
SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:
