CHURCHES:

MOUTH OF LICKING (1794)

Mouth of Licking Church was constituted in October 1794, at the home of William DeCourcey. The original church building was erected on property owned by Major David Leitch, on the bank of the Licking River, about six miles from where it empties into the Ohio River. The charter members were William DeCourcey, Bethuel Riggs, Closs Thompson, Joseph Kelley, and their wives.

A few years later the church moved their place of meeting to a log building near the station which had been built by Major Leitch.

The first pastor of Mouth of Licking Church was Elder John Smith, from Columbia, Ohio. He was followed by Elders Bethuel Riggs, John Beal, James Lee, and others. Elder Wilson Thompson joined this church in June 1801, and was baptized by Elder James Lee, and was licensed to preach here. Elder Wilson Thompson's parents and grandparents were members here, and Elder Thompson's wife, Mary Grigg, joined and was baptized in this church by Elder James Lee. This church became a member of the Elkhorn Association, and probably later the North Bend Association.
