CHURCHES:PROVIDENCE
The Primitive Baptist Church called Providence was organized at the home of William and Abigail Davis Jones in November 1853. The Hazel Creek Association was organized the next year in the same home. William Jones served the church as deacon, and as clerk until his death in 1872. The meeting house of this church was located about seven miles northwest of Plano, on a rock road. The Jones Cemetery is close by, where many of the early pastors and members of the church are buried. The church is often called the "Jones church" in the local community.
Pastors of the church since 1900 included Elders S. B. Jones, M. G. Jones, and Newton J. Jones.
SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:
Adams, Atkinson, Cate, Chance, Conner, Davis, Gard, Jones, Lammers, Lister, Locke, Morelan, Rhodes, Robbins, Sales, Sharr, Shelton, Simmons, Willoughby (very incomplete list due to loss of records).
MORAVIA
The Moravia Church was organized by 1854 or earlier, but the exact date is not known, due to loss of records. The exact place of the meetings of this church is unknown to us. The Moravia Church united with the Hazel Creek Association in October 1855, and remained a part of that body during most, if not all, of its existence. The messengers in 1855 were G. L. Stevens, and R. Cummins, who reported 15 members. The church gradually increased until there were about 40 members.
Among the pastors of this church were Elders J. Skinner (1856), Joseph Armstrong (by 1856), Isaac D. Sidwell, E. Ellis, and Samuel Cate.
Minutes of the Hazel Creek Association for 1915 show that the Moravia Church was still in existence at that time, but with only five members, including J. M. Cate, of Centerville, and H. C. Cate, of Moravia.
