CHURCHES:

FIRST NODAWAY (SAVANNAH)(1840)

First Nodaway Church was organized on the fourth Saturday in June, 1840, with nineteen charter members, at the home of James Officer. Elders William Thorp and George Walters formed the presbytery. The church was first named New Salem, and petitioned for admittance into the Fishing River Association, James Officer and G. B. Thorp being the first messengers. The name of the church was changed to First Nodaway in August 1840. In September 1849 this church, with several others, organized the Nodaway Association, at Castile Church in Clinton County.

Pastors have included Elders John Edwards, Thomas W. Todd, Eppe Tillery, E. C. Moore, R. M. Simmons, W. J. Pollard, I. J. Clabaugh, J. C. Jones, William Pollard, Cecil Judd, Kenneth Clevenger, and Larry Pearl.

The church agreed to build a frame meeting house in August 1841 (not of hewn logs). This was located about four miles west of Savannah, at Hackberry Ridge. In June 1916 the church appointed a committee to receive funds to build a new church house in Savannah, and a brick building was constructed, which is still in use and well maintained.

LITTLE FLOCK (ST. JOSEPH)(1853)

Little Flock Church was first organized in 1850, as an arm of the First Nodaway church. Todd, Huldah A. Todd, Elizabeth Thorp, and Mildred McGee.

For a time services were held in a union brick building at Jamestown, a few miles north of St. Joseph. In 1891, it was torn down, and a frame house was built, in which Little Flock Church had a day as specified in the deed to the land, where the church met until 1902. The church then met, temporarily in a small church building at the southeast corner of Catawba and Madison Streets in St. Joseph. In July 1905, the church took action to select a site and build a church building; the site selected was the southeast corner of St. Joseph and Myrtle Avenues. It in use by September 1907. In 1925, the building was condemned for public use (to extend a city park and boulevard). The church then obtained lots at the northwest corner of 28th and Olive Streets, and a brick building was erected, which cost $11,000.
