CHURCHES:

LITTLE RIVER (About 1790-1792)

Little River Church, in Sparta, is believed to be the oldest church in the county, having been organized before 1793. In 1808 Little River Church joined the Mountain Association, at which time this church reported a membership of 101. Elder Thomas Douglas was the messenger. Other early pastors included Elders George Douglas and William Lundy. 35 members joined on November 3, 1847, and the membership in 1860 was 115. In 1896 a new meeting house was completed at a cost of $570.00 on land given by Franklin D. Duncan and David Duncan and their wives. In 1920 Elder J. M. Williams and Isom Feder were pastors. Elder J. M. Crouse was pastor from 1921 through August 1925. In October 1922 the first services were held at the new meeting house in the town of Sparta. Elder C. B. Kilby was called as pastor with Elder Crouse. Other pastors have included Elders Jones Shumate, H. C. Nichols, J. R. Sanders, S. G. Caudill, Walter Evans, and Eugene Bennett.
